A week of vacation begins. Here is a photo at sunset.
Contest: Guess where I am by Thursday at midnight GMT. The three closest answers (geographically speaking) will be rewarded as follows:
First prize: I will give 25 pounds in your honour to your favourite charity that provides services to people suffering from AIDS, addiction, mental illness or any other serious medical disorder. If your winning guess is within 50 km of my location, I will make it 50 pounds.
Second prize: An all expense-paid weekend in Basingstoke.
Third prize: Two all expense-paid weekends in Basingstoke.
Contest rules: Second and third prize will be awarded only to contestants who can summarize the complete works of Proust in 30 seconds. But first prize has no such strings attached and will rewarded based solely on guess accuracy. Good luck.

It doesn’t look quite big enough, but I’m going to guess Cape Town, and that we’re looking at Table Mountain.

Ummm. I’m going to guess… Basingstoke?

South Portugal.
Could be a trick question because one can fly from anywhere to anywhere in that time. But at a wild guess: by Thursday midnight, GMT, you’ll be waking up Friday morning in Darwin, Australia.
Arizona.
I’ll also go with Arizona, but closer to where you are than NickT guessed.
All that red, got to be Mars. Say hello to Newt Gingrich.
Manhattan, West 53rd Street.
Alice Springs.
Thumb Butte, Prescott, AZ
It looks a bit like Ben Bulben, County Sligo, Ireland.
[William Butler Yeats is buried in Drumcliffe, with Ben Bulben looking down on him, as was his wish. The mountain crops up in Celtic myths, and in his poetry.]
Cast a cold eye
on life, on death.
Horseman, pass by.
I’m going to go with Andrew, but with better hills: Auckland, New Zealand.

The silhouette is of Ayers Rock, Aust. and world traveler Humphreys will end his vacation on the splendid island of Bali.
Hmm-not Ayers Rock, too flat for Isandlwana, not craggy enough for Table Mountain…water in the foreground, so maybe something Hawaiian?
I’ll argue for somewhere in the western Scottish Highlands. The mountain looks like one of those in the highlands, and there’s one of the deep bays or lochs in the foreground.
Gibraltar? It certainly isn’t the iconic profile but from other angles it isn’t a bad match…
Canaries?

What’s a vacation?
