Well, Mark, you forget something. In 1948, Israel was a formidable military power and had lasting security commitments from the United States, plus control of many strategic outposts in the region, not to mention the atomic bomb. Ben-Gurion could afford to say what he said. Today it is weak and vulnerable to catastrophic military invasion by its Arab neighbors, whose armored and infantry divisions could come streaming over its borders at almost any minute. Totally different situation!
