After a week of listening to Londoners make jokes, puns and japes about l’affaire Murdoch, the following emerges as my favorite. A witty friend pointed out that “News of the World” spoonerizes as “Whirls of the Nude”

For now, his Sun´s page three nudes are safe, but as his shares hemorrhage, Murdoch´s News Corps, threatens to become News Corpse. Fair and balanced but hopelessly obsequious to the right, Fox News predictably has not uttered a word on its paymaster. It is a Pravada·non-story· to them, but to the Brits, even to conservatives, it is the Arab Spring or the Irish Catholic Church pedophile scandal rolled into one.

When I was a youth, NOWT was popularly known as “News of the Screws”. I believe even to insiders it was known as “Screws” up to its demise.
