During the six nice years I taught at Michigan, I would take a coffee break most mornings to schmooze with my colleague Michael Chernew. His widely-recognized work with colleagues on value-based insurance design plays an important part in health reform and in the design of private wellness efforts. He’s now a member of the Institute of Medicine and has won many other honors.

Austin Frakt and Ezra Klein quote him extensively today on some issues related to accountable care organizations and Medicare policy. Michael’s Congressional testimony from May 5 merits the praise, as does this Health Affairs piece on Massachusetts private payer innovations.

We’ve both wandered to different pastures. Life moves on. I do miss those Mountain Dew health economics seminars from a real master.
